In the wake of Carl Nassib making history by becoming the first active out player in the NFL, LGBTQ+ representation in sports will make another step change at the Tokyo Olympics.

At least 131 publicly out gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and nonbinary athletes are headed to Tokyo for the Summer Olympic Games, doubling the number of out athletes that competed in the 2016 Rio games.

This includes 30 competitors from the US, leading all other countries in the number of out athletes on their teams.

Women’s soccer may have the highest representation among sports, with 30 out players across the international teams.
