Welcoming the opportunity to shine a light on another group in our community, Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week recognizes people on the aromantic spectrum—those who experience little, rare, or no romantic attraction. It’s an opportunity to increase visibility and understanding of aromantic identities, and to challenge the assumption that romantic relationships are the “default” or required path to a meaningful life. Aromantic people may or may not experience sexual attraction, and many build deeply committed connections through friendships, queerplatonic partnerships, community, and chosen family.

This week is also a reminder to use inclusive language and avoid “romance-centric” expectations in social settings and workplace culture. Simple actions—like not pressuring coworkers to discuss dating, respecting how someone labels (or doesn’t label) their relationships, and recognizing that intimacy and commitment can take many forms—help create a more welcoming environment for everyone on the a-spectrum.
