To close out Pride Month in June, the State Department announced it would be opening up the option for non-binary people to select gender markers that more closely match their identity.

Going forward, applicants will be able to self-select ‘M’ or ‘F’ without medical certification, if their self-selected gender does not match that on their citizenship or ID documents.  This change is expected to be activated quickly.

A longer term objective is to update available gender markers to include non-binary option ‘X’.  This is likely to take more time, but work is underway.
